Application

Combustion at high speed

Flame, spray, ignition and detonation seen frame by frame, with sensitivity for low light.

The challenge

The flame front moves at speeds of meters per second inside a cylinder or chamber with small windows and weak light. Chemiluminescence, spray and ignition call for a high frame rate, high sensitivity and, often, UV capture.

What the camera needs to deliver

  • BSI

    high-sensitivity sensor

More signal in low light and short exposures.

  • UV

    from 250 nm to NIR

UV Extended variants for species that emit in the ultraviolet.

  • 76,000 fps

    at 1 Mpx

Temporal resolution for flame fronts and detonation.

How to plan your test in 5 steps

  1. Define the phenomenon

Spray, ignition, flame or detonation; optical window and spectral range.

  2. Choose sensor and range

Monochrome BSI for sensitivity; UV Extended when needed.

  3. Optics and filters

Lenses and filters for the species of interest.

  4. Synchronize with the engine

Trigger by crank angle or injection pulse.

  5. Analyze

PCA and export to image analysis tools.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a UV camera for combustion?

Only when the species of interest emits in the ultraviolet (OH*, for example). For a visible flame, the monochrome BSI sensor is enough.
