Crash testing at high speed

Every millisecond of the impact, inside and outside the vehicle, synchronized with the test sensors.

Imagem provisória da aplicação Crash test e segurança veicular

An impact lasts 120 ms. The engineering decision depends on every one of them.

Structural deformation, airbag deployment, dummy kinematics and seat belt behavior happen in windows of a few milliseconds, inside a passenger compartment that rotates, vibrates and is subjected to up to 170 G. Without high-speed imaging synchronized with the instrumentation, the lab measures the result but cannot see the cause.

What the camera needs to deliver

  • 1,000 to 5,000 fps

from 1080p to 4 Mpx; up to 1,180 fps at 4K on the C980J

Detail of the dummy and the structure without missing the instant of impact.

  • 170 G

    shock rating

The C540J and C980J survive the impact and run the test again.

  • Single trigger

    synchronized with the DAQ

All cameras triggered and aligned frame by frame with the instrumentation.

  • 8 per JB3

    cameras per Junction Box

Up to 8 cameras per JB3, compatible with the JB2 already installed.

How to plan your test in 5 steps

  1. Define the test

Protocol, speed, what needs to be measured and at what resolution.

  2. Position the cameras

Onboard in the passenger compartment and offboard on the track, with lenses and distances calculated.

  3. Illuminate and protect

Continuous flicker-free light, protective housings and cables with slack for the impact.

  4. Synchronize and trigger

Shared trigger with the DAQ, timecode and pre-trigger so you do not miss time zero.

  5. Record and analyze

Download through the JB3, analysis in the PCA and export to the report.

Frequently asked questions

How many fps does a crash test need?

Frame rates between 1,000 and 5,000 fps cover most protocols. Resolution matters as much as frame rate, which is why the C-Series works at 4 and 8 Mpx.

Can Phantom cameras withstand the impact?

The C540J and C980J models have a 170 G shock rating and are designed for repeated onboard use.

How do I synchronize with the lab DAQ?

A shared external trigger, timecode and pre-trigger. The JB3 Junction Box distributes signal and power to up to 8 cameras.

Can I test it before buying?

Yes. DVPRO runs demos in the lab and offers rentals for a given period, with an engineer operating the equipment.

I'd like a demo for crash testing

We reply within 1 business day with the recommended configuration, import lead time and rental options.
