.cine format

File format of Phantom cameras, with capture metadata, read by the PCC, the PCA and third-party software.

B

BSI (back side illuminated)

Sensor architecture in which light enters from the side opposite the circuitry, increasing quantum efficiency and sensitivity in low light.

C

CineMag

Removable Phantom memory that receives the recording from the RAM and is read in the CineStation.

D

DIC (digital image correlation)

Technique that measures strain and displacement by comparing speckle patterns between images.

E

Exposure

Time during which the sensor collects light in each frame; at high speed, from microseconds to nanoseconds.

F

fps (frames per second)

Number of frames captured each second. At high speed it ranges from about 1,000 to more than 700,000 fps, depending on the resolution.

G

Global shutter

All pixels are exposed at the same time, with no distortion of moving objects; standard in high-speed cameras.

J

Junction Box (JB2, JB3)

Unit that distributes signal, synchronization and power to several C-Series cameras in crash testing; the JB3 supports up to 8 cameras.

P

PCA (Phantom Cine Analyzer)

Motion analysis software that extracts displacement, velocity and acceleration from .cine files.

PCC (Phantom Camera Control)

Software for control, capture and playback of Phantom cameras.

PIV (particle image velocimetry)

Technique that measures velocity fields in fluids from pairs of images of particles illuminated by a laser.

Pre-trigger

Part of the memory that keeps what happened before the trigger, thanks to circular recording.

Q

Quantum efficiency (QE)

Fraction of the photons that the sensor converts into signal; the higher it is, the better the performance in low light and short exposures.

R

Resolution

Number of pixels in the frame, for example 1280 x 800 (1 Mpx) or 2560 x 1664 (4.2 Mpx). Reducing the resolution increases the maximum rate.

S

Shock rating

Maximum acceleration the camera withstands in operation; the C-Series J is rated for 170 G.

T

Trigger

Signal that sets time zero of the recording; the camera keeps the pre-trigger and records the post-trigger.
